What is simikot airport?

Simikot airport is a local airport located in Simikot town of Humla district in the western region of Nepal. The airport lies at an elevation of 9,751 feet (2,971 m) above sea level and has a runway length of 1,641 feet (500 m) that accommodates small aircraft such as Dornier Do 228, Twin Otter, and Pilatus PC-6.

Simikot airport is considered one of the most challenging airports in Nepal due to its location in a valley surrounded by high mountains, difficult terrain, unpredictable weather conditions, and limited resources. The airport is primarily used for domestic flights to popular destinations such as Kathmandu, Nepalgunj, and Jumla, serving as a gateway to the remote and beautiful region of Humla.

Despite the challenges, Simikot airport plays a vital role in connecting the local population with the rest of the country, facilitating the transportation of essential goods and services, and supporting the region's tourism industry. The airport has undergone several upgrades in recent years, including runway expansion, installation of an instrument landing system, and construction of a new terminal building.
